thank you Celine! And yeah I got so obsessed w Koestenbaum while working on this lol — if you know of any writers that have a similar/complementary approach I’d love to hear abt them!
I'm 40 and I appreciate you finally getting me to see what is special about Charli XCX. You did a great job of that, and of painting a picture of what I guess I'd call "your generation" of women. Even though I don't feel like I'm that much older than you (don't want to, anyway), we have lived through totally different experiences and it is always comforting to me to find out just how smart, sensitive, and introspective y'all are.
wow. this was awesome. so many beautiful moments of prose and apt moments that reflect the culture. thank you for writing it!!! (we clearly have similar interests <3)
This is incredible. Your writing style, your citations, your subject matter, and your precision and clarity on something as muddled and messy as all the feelings of girlhood. Thank you—this was a delight to read.
I never really identified with a lot of Charli XCX's music--I've never been a partier or even a seeker of high-intensity stimulation the way she is. But I did always like the way she never shies away from shamelessly intense emotional expression. I really latched on to "I Love It" about 5 years after it came out when I, a 90s bitch, broke up with a staid mediocre boyfriend born in 1979. It dialed up my feelings about that breakup to 11 in a way that was so cathartic. I never quite latched onto the rest of her music in the same way, but after reading this essay I want to experience her more recent music (which I've never listened to with intent) and also that of Callas, who sounds like an incredible character.
thought I was done reading brat essays- I was definitely not. loved this sm <3
ok yay I was genuinely worried abt losing timeliness (journalism school brain rot strikes again)
“i made the choice to become a teenager” holy shit do i love this opening line

this was very enjoyable to read—loved the brief history of Charli XCX and the Wayne Koestenbaum quotes 💌
